UZI NYC, and Why They Are Cool....
My Interview with one of Uzi's owners and designers, Mari:
1) How would you describe Uzi NYC?Uzi is Dave, Mari, Missy. Leticia, and Max. 10 sewing machines tons of silkscreens and even more fabric located in Sunset Park. Brooklyn2)How did you end up here? What was the evolution of your business?Dave and Mari started a small boutique in Denver Colorado in 1993 after visiting London and becoming insanely inspired by British fashion. We re-located our business to New York in 1999 so we could be closer to the fashion industry.3) Who is your customer? We dress a variety of women from 15 to 85. Usually women that have a hard time finding functional layerable clothing that fits nicely is made from natural fibers and is reasonably priced.4) Can you summarize the design/sourcing/production process? How long does it take to create one season? It takes about 2 months to sew the samples, choose a model, create the catalog and show the line. We are constantly designing in our heads trying to think of new colors or prints that we want to work with.
5) What impact do you hope to make with your company?
We want to make life a little easier for women. A lot of clothing out on the market today are constructed out of very cheap fabrics and don’t look good on a majority of women.
6) Do you have any daily personal rituals that you would care to share?
We have to feed Missy first thing in the morning. If you don’t feed Missy she will follow you around and try to trip you.
